STEP and GLB are two of the most common 3D formats, but they come from different worlds and serve distinct needs. If you need to share a 3D model with a client, subcontractor, or embed it on a website, understanding this difference will save you time.
STEP (ISO 10303) is the standard exchange format for industrial CAD data. It encodes exact part geometry, assemblies, tolerances, and technical metadata. It's the format your engineering team exports from SolidWorks, CATIA, Siemens NX, or Fusion 360.
GLB (GL Transmission Format Binary) is the 3D format optimized for the web, created by the Khronos Group. It's essentially a packaged binary GLTF. Browsers, web rendering engines, and e-commerce platforms (Shopify, Apple AR Quick Look) support it natively.
