OBJ Viewer Online
Drop an .obj file, with its .mtl and textures if you have them. The model shows up right here, in 3D: rotate, zoom, inspect. Your file never leaves your browser.
Drop your OBJ file here
The .obj alone, or with its .mtl and images. A .zip works too.
OBJ · MTL · PNG/JPG · ZIP, up to 100 MB
Your file goes nowhere
The model is read and displayed inside your browser tab. Nothing is uploaded or copied to our servers: open your browser's Network tab and you will see no request carrying your file.
How to open an OBJ file online
- 1
Drop your .obj above. If it has colours, add its .mtl and texture images (PNG, JPG), or a .zip containing them.
- 2
The model appears instantly: rotate it, zoom in, inspect every face.
- 3
Download it as GLB, lighter for the web, or create a link to send it to a client.
OBJ, STL or GLB: which format for which job
| Format | Geometry | Colour / textures | Web weight | Primary use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OBJ | Mesh (ASCII text) | Yes, via the .mtl | High | Exchange between tools, product design |
| STL | Triangle mesh | No | Medium | 3D printing |
| GLB / glTF | Mesh + scene | Yes (built-in PBR materials) | Low (binary) | Web and real-time display |

Why does my OBJ show up grey?
An OBJ only stores geometry. Colours live in a .mtl file (Material Template Library), which itself points to images. If you drop only the .obj, the model therefore shows up grey.
- Drop the .obj, the .mtl and the images together, or bundle them in a .zip.
- Check that the image names written in the .mtl match the files you provide: a difference in upper or lower case is enough to lose a texture.
- OBJ defines no unit: the scale depends on the software that exported it.
- Very heavy model? Since OBJ is text, it quickly weighs hundreds of MB; GLB is far more compact.
Frequently asked questions
How do I open an OBJ file for free?
Drop your .obj on this page: it shows up in 3D in your browser, free, with no account and nothing to install. On the desktop, Blender and MeshLab, both free, also open OBJ files.
Is my file uploaded to your servers?
No. The model is read and displayed in your browser. No network request carries your file, which you can check in your browser's Network tab.
Can OBJ files have textures?
Yes, but not inside the .obj itself: colours, materials and textures are described in a companion .mtl file that references PNG or JPG images. Drop all three together for a full render.
What is the difference between OBJ and STL?
OBJ handles textures, materials and UV coordinates through its .mtl; STL only stores a triangle mesh, with no colour. OBJ is for visualisation and exchange, STL for 3D printing.
Do I need to convert OBJ to GLB for the web?
Not to view it here. But GLB, the binary version of glTF, loads much faster on a website: the “Download as GLB” button produces it in one click.
