Independent comparison · OmniView vs Autodesk ViewerUpdated : August 2026

Autodesk Viewer is perfect for Fusion 360. For everything else, there is better.

If your team lives in Fusion 360 or BIM 360, Autodesk Viewer makes sense. But to send a STEP file to a client who has no Autodesk account, or to share under your own brand, OmniView 3D is simpler and faster.

    Why switch

The right tool for the right job

    The problem with Autodesk Viewer

    • You send an Autodesk Viewer link to an external client — they have to create an Autodesk account to see anything. That friction kills 30% of meetings.
    • Autodesk Viewer is consistent inside the Autodesk ecosystem, but outside it becomes one more tool your sales team has to learn.
    • Your Autodesk shares carry their logo and their UI. A poor signal for a high-end client pitch.
    • Your CAD data transits through Forge servers (US) — a problem for sensitive projects or defence and healthcare contracts.

    How OmniView solves it

    • One OmniView link. The recipient clicks, they see it. No account, no profile to create.
    • A single interface, designed for sharing with non-technical people. No training required.
    • White-label from Pro. Your shares carry your identity, not ours.
    • European Union hosting, GDPR compliance out of the box. Your models never cross the Atlantic.

    Frequently asked questions

OmniView vs Autodesk Viewer — FAQ

Can I share a STEP file without the recipient having an Autodesk account?+

Yes. With OmniView 3D you upload your STEP file and get a link that clients, suppliers or colleagues open straight in their browser — no Autodesk account, no installation.

What is the best free alternative to Autodesk Viewer?+

OmniView 3D offers a free Starter plan (3 models, 100 MB) with no credit card. It supports STEP, IGES, GLB, OBJ and FBX, and produces shareable links in 60 seconds.

OmniView 3D vs Autodesk Viewer: what is the main difference?+

Autodesk Viewer is consistent within the Autodesk ecosystem but requires an account to open certain links. OmniView 3D is built to share with non-CAD users without friction: no account on the recipient side, a simplified interface, and EU hosting.

Is 3D data hosted in Europe with OmniView 3D?+

Yes. Models are stored on AWS eu-west-1 (Ireland), in line with GDPR. Your CAD files do not transit through servers in the United States.

Do you need an Autodesk account to use Autodesk Viewer?+

Yes. Autodesk Viewer requires a (free) Autodesk account to upload and, in several sharing configurations, on the recipient side too. OmniView 3D requires no account from the recipient — the link is enough.

Does Autodesk Viewer open SolidWorks or Catia files?+

Partially, through Forge conversion. OmniView 3D supports STEP, IGES, GLB, OBJ and FBX natively; SolidWorks (.sldprt, .sldasm) opens via a prior STEP export, with automatic web conversion in seconds.

    Is Autodesk Viewer free?+

The web viewer is free for users, but it sits inside the Autodesk ecosystem (Fusion 360, BIM 360 — both paid). OmniView 3D offers a standalone free Starter plan, with no dependency on another tool.

Does Autodesk Viewer work well on mobile?+

It works, but the interface is not mobile-first and large files are slow. OmniView 3D is natively mobile, with native AR on iOS and Android.

How do I share a STEP file without asking my client to create an Autodesk account?+

Upload the file to OmniView 3D. You get a link your client opens directly in their browser — no Autodesk account, no OmniView account, no installation.

Can the viewer interface be customised (white-label)?+

Autodesk Viewer always shows the Autodesk logo and UI. OmniView 3D offers full white-labelling (your logo, your colours) from the Pro plan.

Does OmniView 3D do BIM analysis like Autodesk Viewer?+

No. OmniView 3D focuses on sharing and visualisation. For advanced BIM analysis (clash detection, IFC coordination), Autodesk Viewer and Navisworks remain relevant. The two are complementary.

    Are Autodesk Viewer files private?+

By default yes, but they are hosted on Autodesk Forge (US). OmniView 3D guarantees European Union hosting (Ireland), native GDPR compliance, and automatic deletion after 3 days on the free plan (up to 30 days on Pro/Business).

What is the best Autodesk Viewer alternative for European B2B?+

OmniView 3D: no account required on the client side, white-label, EU hosting, a free plan to start, and public pricing (49 EUR/month on Pro).

How many CAD formats does Autodesk Viewer support compared with OmniView?+

Autodesk Viewer supports around 60 formats through Forge (with some fidelity caveats). OmniView 3D supports the formats that matter day to day in B2B with native web import (STEP, IGES, GLB, OBJ, FBX, STL, 3MF); SolidWorks opens via a prior STEP export.

Your data stays in Europe — by design, not as an option

Autodesk Viewer is hosted on US servers. With OmniView 3D, your CAD models are stored exclusively in the European Union (AWS eu-west-1, Ireland). GDPR compliance out of the box — no contractual clauses to negotiate, no transatlantic transfer risk. A decisive argument for sensitive projects, defence contracts and healthcare.

When Autodesk Viewer is still the better choice

Autodesk Viewer remains the better choice if your whole team already works inside the Autodesk ecosystem (Fusion 360, BIM 360, Revit). Internal consistency, Fusion project version management and advanced BIM features (clash detection, IFC coordination) have no direct equivalent in OmniView 3D. If you already pay for the Autodesk subscription, using the built-in viewer makes sense for internal workflows.
