    To reduce a STEP file's size, the simplest and lossless method is to zip it: because a STEP is a text file, it often shrinks by 60 to 90%. If that isn't enough, you can simplify the model (remove fillets, chamfers and unneeded parts) or adjust the export tolerance. And if the goal is simply to send it to someone so they can view it, sharing it through a browser link avoids the weight problem entirely. Here are the 3 methods, plus the alternative.

    Why STEP files are so heavy

    A STEP file encodes exact B-Rep geometry — surfaces, edges, solids, tolerances — as ASCII text. Every curved surface, every fillet and every component of an assembly adds lines of data. A full mechanical assembly can therefore reach several hundred megabytes. But that text is highly redundant, which is exactly why it compresses so well.

    Method 1 — Zip it (simplest, lossless)

    This is the first thing to try, and often the only step you need. ZIP compression reduces a STEP without touching its geometry: the recipient unzips and gets the exact original file back. The gain is large precisely because STEP is text.

    Method 2 — Simplify the model before export

    If the file is still too heavy, reduce the geometry itself in your CAD tool before re-exporting to STEP. This is a lossy reduction: you're removing information. Only do it on a copy, and only if the recipient doesn't need the detail you strip.

    • Delete non-essential fillets and chamfers (they multiply surfaces)
    • Remove internal components the recipient doesn't need to see (fasteners, wiring)
    • Defeature: simplify superfluous cosmetic or manufacturing details
    • Export a sub-assembly instead of the full assembly where possible

    Method 3 — Adjust export tolerance and options

    Most CAD tools (Fusion 360, Inventor, SolidWorks, Onshape) expose STEP export settings that affect size. Raising the spline fit tolerance — say from 0.0001 mm to 0.001 or 0.01 mm — lightens the file at the cost of slightly less precise curve geometry. Check the tolerance stays acceptable for the recipient's use (fine for visualization; be careful for high-precision machining). Also exclude superfluous data (colors, metadata) if the export allows it.

    The email limit: 25 MB and rejected files

    Even zipped, an assembly STEP often exceeds email attachment limits: Gmail and Outlook cap around 25 MB, and many corporate servers are stricter still. The result: a rejected email, or a file silently blocked. People then fall back on WeTransfer or Dropbox — but those only solve transfer, not opening: the recipient downloads a file they still can't view without CAD software.

    The alternative: share without reducing, via a link
