    The PLY format (Polygon File Format, also known as the Stanford Triangle Format) is an open 3D file format designed to store objects obtained by 3D scanning.     What is the difference between PLY and STL?

    STL stores only surface geometry (triangles), with no color or normal data. PLY is richer: it supports per-vertex colors, normals and custom properties. For a colored 3D scan, PLY is preferable to STL.
