How to Protect Your IP When Sharing CAD Files With Clients

Sending a STEP file exposes your IP. Here's how to share 3D models with clients and subcontractors without losing control of your design files.

When you send a STEP file to a client or subcontractor, you hand them access to the exact geometry of your part. They can open it, modify it, pass it on, and potentially have it manufactured elsewhere. This uncontrolled exposure is one of the most common IP risks in manufacturing — and one of the least addressed.

The real risks of sharing raw CAD files

• A subcontractor receives your STEP and forwards it to a competitor for a comparison quote
• A client copies your design and has it manufactured by a cheaper third party
• The file is stored on third-party servers (WeTransfer, email) with no control on your end
• You don't know how many people have access to the file or for how long

Method 1: share a viewer link, not the file

The most effective protection is to never send the STEP file directly. Instead, upload it to OmniView 3D and share a viewer link.
